According to 3TV, a loss prevention officer confronted the two suspects, a man and a woman, in the parking lot of the Arrowhead Towne Center. When the woman produced a handgun and pointed it at the security officer, 61 year old Mervin Brewer sprang into action.
“It was self-defense for the safety of my wife and the security guard,” Brewer said. “Without a doubt, I was justified.”
Brewer pulled out his gun and told the suspects to freeze. At that point, the woman turned and pointed the handgun at Brewer, so he fired shots. This caused the suspects to flee on a motorcycle.
Because the incident is still under investigation, it is still unknown if Brewer will face any charges. Police representatives, however, have told reporters that it is “justifiable to use force to protect someone else.”
The mall was never closed during the incident.
