SHREVEPORT, LA – An intruder broke into a Shreveport woman’s home on Sunday night and the woman defended herself with her firearm. It was a 16 year old kid that she shot, she was successful in defending herself, but she said that she had no firearms training whatsoever.
She even told KSLA 12 that it was the first time she’d ever fired a gun.
Louisiana is one of the few states out there that doesn’t require a permit to have a gun in the home. You don’t even need a permit to carry your gun with you in your vehicle. Understanding how to properly use that gun when the time comes to do so is incredibly important because not only could one simple gun class save your life… it could keep you from going to jail.
Using the example above, state law in Louisiana prohibits the use of deadly force to defend your property. This means that if you kill an intruder in LA who happens to be unarmed, even if they’re in your home, you could face charges for using deadly force.
For many, that’s why a CCL course is often the best answer. This allows them to carry their gun on them outside of the car, take it out of their home, and be more protected at all times. What good is a gun if there’s a bad guy coming at you and your gun is locked in your car?
Bottom line: be proactive. If you own a gun, make sure you know how to use it. Don’t be like the Shreveport woman who fired a gun for the very first time in an emergency.
